Don’t Put Off Your Family’s Dental Exams

One of the most important ways to get teeth ready for back to school is booking your family’s dental exams. We recommend getting a dental exam and dental cleaning every six months. Once school starts, it seems activities don’t let up until after the first of the year. So it’s a good idea to get dental exams for your children now, while your calendar is still fairly uncluttered.

During an exam, our dentists will ensure your child’s teeth are developing as they should. If they spot any alignment issues that need to be addressed, they may refer you to an orthodontist.

Your children’s teeth will also get a thorough cleaning, to remove the plaque that causes cavities and other problems. Even if your children brush and floss regularly at home, it’s easy to miss areas between the teeth and around the gumline.

Our dentists may also suggest applications of fluoride and/or dental sealants to help prevent cavities. If they find any cavities, they’ll repair them with a filling. If cavities aren’t caught early enough, it’s possible they’ll need a more extensive dental restoration like a crown.

Exams and cleanings are important for older kids too, especially ones living on a college campus. It’s even harder to keep tabs on them than it is your children at home! Get their teeth cleaned and examined before you send them back to school.

Get Your Athletes a Custom Mouthguard

If you’ve got kids who play on school sports teams, get their teeth ready for back to school with a mouthguard. According to an article in the Journal of the American Dental Association,13-39 percent of all dental injuries are sports-related. That’s a lot of injuries! If they participate in sports that involve running, physical contact, and/or balls that spend at least some time in the air, it’s a good idea to get mouthguards for your children.

We take impressions of their teeth so their mouthguards will fit perfectly and be more comfortable to wear. If they aren’t comfortable, your athletes will be tempted to just leave their mouthguards on the sidelines.

Get Teeth Ready for Back to School With Cosmetic Dentistry

If you’ve got children in high school or college, consider improving their smiles with cosmetic dentistry before school starts. A great-looking smile will improve their confidence, in both social and academic settings. Confidence is important, whether you’re asking someone out on a first date or interviewing for an internship.

Among the cosmetic dental treatments they can get at our office:

  • Dental veneers, which are great for covering flaws like chips, cracks, and stains. They are sometimes called “instant orthodontics” because they can also hide small gaps and minor misalignment.
  • Tooth bonding, an affordable treatment for concealing minor imperfections that can be completed in a single appointment.
  • Teeth whitening, with either a treatment in our office or professional-strength gel and custom-made whitening trays that can be used at home.
  • Gum reshaping, using lasers to quickly and easily remove excess gum tissue or even out a crooked gumline.
